Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department has suspended the food licences of Amazon, Swiggy Instamart and BigBasket over listings involving datura products. The authorities said the products were being displayed on the platforms in a manner that raised food-safety concerns.
Datura is a poisonous plant and its consumption can be dangerous. Food-safety officials have directed the platforms to remove the concerned listings and advertisements.
The companies have been asked to comply with the department’s directions and provide the necessary information to authorities. The action has brought renewed attention to safety standards for food products sold through online platforms.
