India Faces Weakest Monsoon in Years, Raising Concerns for Kharif Crops

India is facing one of its weakest monsoon seasons in recent years, with rainfall around 13% below normal as of August 24. The strengthening El Niño conditions are increasing concerns about water availability and agricultural production.

The rainfall deficit could particularly affect important Kharif crops such as cotton, soybean, maize and pulses. Reduced soil moisture may also create difficulties for farmers preparing for the upcoming winter crop season.

Agriculture experts are closely monitoring rainfall during the remaining monsoon period. A continued deficit could affect farm incomes and potentially put pressure on food prices in the coming months.
